Scaffolding Understanding by Redesigning Games for Education (SURGE) focuses on integrating and overlaying popular gameplay dynamics with formal physics representations and visualizations.
The goals of SURGE focus on:
Harnessing the affordances of videogames to help students build a strong intuitive/tacit understanding of the physics involved.
Supporting students in extending this intuitive understanding to explicit formalized structures of the discipline that the student can transfer across contexts.
Through this process, SURGE will attempt to increase students’ understanding of Newtonian mechanics, including core elements from curricula considered too complex for younger age-groups, while retaining the strong motivational components of current commercial game design.
